Markup Calculator

Markup Calculator

Compare selling price, profit, markup and margin without mixing them up.

UNDERSTAND THE ANSWER

How is this calculated?

Markup measures profit against cost, while margin measures profit against revenue. The percentages are different even when the dollar profit is the same.

Markup versus marginMarkup = Profit ÷ Cost · Margin = Profit ÷ Selling price

A practical example

An item that costs $60 and sells for $100 earns $40: a 66.7% markup and a 40% margin.

Assumptions, interpretation and common mistakes

Calculation assumptions

  • Cost and selling price are stated per identical unit.
  • Cost includes the expenses you want recovered through price.
  • No discounts, tax or returns alter the selling price.

How to interpret the result

  • Markup measures profit relative to cost.
  • Margin measures profit relative to selling price.
  • The dollar profit is identical even though markup and margin percentages differ.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Adding a target margin percentage directly to cost.
  • Leaving freight, payment fees or labor out of unit cost.
  • Applying a discount without recalculating the realized margin.
