Interest Rate Calculator: Find the Rate from a Payment
Interest Rate Calculator: Find the Rate from a Payment
Solve the implied nominal annual interest rate from the amount received, equal monthly payment, term and upfront fees.
UNDERSTAND THE ANSWER
How is this calculated?
The calculator finds the monthly rate that makes the present value of all equal monthly payments match the net amount received after upfront fees. It then multiplies that monthly rate by 12 to report a nominal annual rate.
Default example: receiving $25,000 and repaying $500.95 monthly for 60 months implies a nominal annual rate of about 7.5% when upfront fees are zero. Total scheduled payments are $30,057.
Tax and location note
This calculator is not a regulatory APR disclosure and is not tied to a country. Currency follows your selected setting. Taxes, compounding conventions, irregular dates, insurance and lender-specific charges may change the legally disclosed rate; verify any offer with the provider.
Assumptions, interpretation and common mistakes
Calculation assumptions
Payments are equal, monthly and made at the end of each period.
The amount received equals principal minus the upfront fee entered.
The reported annual rate is the solved monthly rate multiplied by 12, not an effective annual rate or jurisdiction-specific APR.
How to interpret the result
Use the solved rate to compare loans only when their timing and included fees are consistent.
A higher fee lowers net proceeds and raises the implied borrowing rate even if the payment is unchanged.
Review total payments alongside the rate to understand the cash cost over the full term.
Common mistakes to avoid
Do not enter a weekly or biweekly payment as though it were monthly.
Do not omit mandatory upfront charges when comparing the economic cost of offers.
Do not confuse the nominal annual result with an effective annual rate or a lender's regulated APR.
