Date difference methodDays = |End date − Start date| ÷ 86,400,000 ms

A practical example

January 1 to December 31, 2026 is 364 elapsed days, or 52 weeks.

Assumptions, interpretation and common mistakes

Calculation assumptions

  • Dates are treated as calendar dates at UTC midnight.
  • The main result counts elapsed days and excludes the end date from an inclusive count.
  • Times of day, holidays and business-day rules are excluded.

How to interpret the result

  • Days between dates is the absolute elapsed calendar-day difference.
  • Inclusive count adds one to include both start and end dates.
  • Full weeks shows complete seven-day periods plus remaining days.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Expecting both endpoints to be counted in elapsed days.
  • Using calendar days when a deadline requires business days.
  • Assuming every month contains 30 days.
