Discount Calculator: Sale Price, Savings & Tax

Discount Calculator: Sale Price, Savings & Tax

Calculate a sale price, amount saved and after-tax total from the original price, discount percentage and sales-tax rate.

UNDERSTAND THE ANSWER

How is this calculated?

The calculator first multiplies the original price by the discount rate to find the savings. It subtracts those savings from the original price, then applies the entered sales-tax rate to the discounted price.

Discount and after-tax price formulasSavings = original price × discount rate; final price = (original price − savings) × (1 + tax rate)

A practical example

Default example: an item priced at $129 with a 20% discount saves $25.80. The sale price is $103.20; with 6% sales tax, the estimated final price is $109.39.

Tax and location note

This calculator is not tied to a country. Amounts use your selected currency, while discount, coupon and sales-tax rules depend on the seller and location. Enter the rate that applies to your purchase; this estimate is not a checkout quote.

Assumptions, interpretation and common mistakes

Calculation assumptions

  • The percentage discount applies to the full original price.
  • Sales tax is applied after the discount and uses the single rate entered.
  • Shipping, fixed coupons, tiered promotions and tax exemptions are not included.

How to interpret the result

  • Savings is the amount removed from the original price before tax.
  • Sale price is the discounted subtotal; final price adds the estimated tax.
  • Compare the final price, not only the advertised percentage, when evaluating offers.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Do not enter 20 for the price when the offer says 20% off.
  • Do not add tax to the original price if local rules tax the discounted subtotal.
  • Do not stack multiple discounts by simply adding their percentages; apply them in sequence.
